Task 2:Visual Analysis (Selected Artwork and Visual Analysis

Figure1.1: Artwork of Interest《 Scuola di Atene

Author:
Raphael
Year:1509-1511
Size:500 cm × 770 cm(200 in × 300 in)

Observation:
The work mainly shows different philosophical schools, especially the opposition between idealism and realism. The figures in the painting are mostly ancient Greek philosophers, scientists and mathematicians, who are divided into two factions, each thinking and discussing around their own church.
The figures in this painting are divided into two groups: Plato (left, in red) and Aristotle (right, in blue). The other figures are on the left (Platonic):Pythagoras Heraclitus. Right side (Aristotelian):Euclid / Ptolemy. And Rafael himself in the front right of the frame.

Analysis:
Contrast / Balance / Movement
The colors in the picture are rich and coordinated, and the combination of cold and warm tones enhances the visual layer. Plato wore red (symbolizing passion and philosophical speculation), and Aristotle wore blue (symbolizing reason and science), and the contrast of colors reinforced the philosophical opposition between the two men. This is the Contrast design method.
The picture in the work is symmetrical, with the central figure as the axis, showing a balanced structure. Although the distribution of the characters has their own actions and gestures, the whole maintains a stable visual balance, making the picture vivid and harmonious. This is the Balanced design method.
Each character's movements and expressions express their thoughts and personalities. The gestures of the central characters suggest philosophical differences: Plato's fingers are pointed upward (symbolizing the ideal world), and Aristotle's palms are pointed downward (symbolizing the real world). This is the Movement design method.

Interpretation:
The figures in the painting are divided into two factions representing the opposite of idealism and realism, each philosopher expressing a different school of thought, and their books, gestures and clothing all expressing their different views.

Reflection

  • What have I learnt in this module?
Through this module, I have learned the basic knowledge of design principles, the types of design principles, the three steps of analyzing artworks, and the reasonable use of these knowledge to make appropriate modifications or improvements to the selected artworks.
What did I enjoy the most?
  • What did I not enjoy the most?
The part I enjoy most is analyzing and improving works of art. When analyzing and modifying works of art, I can skillfully apply the knowledge of design principles, which gives me a great sense of accomplishment.
  • What have I learnt about myself through this module?
I think the most important thing I have learned is that I will always review my own work and check the progress of my tasks. I will always pay attention to whether I am following the design principles during the task, and I will release my thinking after the task is completed.
  • What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
I changed the way I thought and the way I got things done. During the task, I will always pay attention to whether I have used the knowledge points of this module. After completing the task, I will go back to check whether I can divergent my thinking again and make some modifications.
  • What are my aspirations?
My wish is that I will always pay attention to my own actions, have a sense of purpose for the design, and strive to complete my inspiration and not to do tasks lightly.
