INSTRUCTIONS

Figure1.0: MIB

TASK 1

In Task 1, we need to list each of the design elements mentioned in the MIB and select artwork that you think is appropriate to express your understanding of these design elements. We need a clear message about the artwork when uploading pictures.

Gestalt theory

Gestalt principles have significantly influenced various art movements and individual artworks, guiding how artists compose visual elements to create unified and impactful pieces.

Title Of Entry: Le Demoiselle d 'Avignon
Although the form in the picture is fragmented, the viewer can still integrate it into a complete image in the picture.

Contras

Contrast is a fundamental principle in art and design, involving the juxtaposition of differing elements to create visual interest, emphasize focal points, and convey specific moods or messages.

Title Of Entry:
The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew
It uses chiaroscuro to draw attention to St. Matthew. Dramatic lighting highlights the characters against a dark background, creating a sense of depth and focus.

Emphasis

Emphasis is a fundamental principle in art that guides viewers' attention to specific areas or elements within a composition, creating focal points and conveying the artist's intended message.

Title Of Entry: Skerik
Use distorted lines and bright colors to highlight the pained expression of the figure in the painting and make it stand out in the background.

Figure1.3: Skerik
Balance

Balance is one of the core principles in art design, aiming to achieve harmony and stability through reasonable arrangement of visual elements.

Title Of Entry: Il Cenacolo,L'Ultima Cena
Jesus is in the center of the picture, and the twelve apostles are divided into left and right sides, forming a balanced layout. The perspective lines converge behind Jesus, further strengthening the visual center.

Figure1.4: La Gioconda
Repetition

Repetition is an important principle in art design, where by reusing certain elements in a work, an artist can create a sense of rhythm, unity, and visual interest.

Title Of Entry: Portraits of Marilyn Monroe
The repeated use of Marilyn Monroe's portrait, with each piece slightly different in color and detail, creates a strong visual impact.

Figure1.5: Portraits of Marilyn Monroe
Movement

Movement is one of the important principles in art design, which aims to guide the audience's sight to browse the work along a specific path, creating a sense of dynamics and mobility.

Title Of Entry: The Starry Night
Using rotating brush strokes and flowing lines, depict the swirling nebulae and wind flow in the night sky, giving the picture a strong sense of dynamics.

Figure1.6: The Starry Night
Harmony & Unity

Harmony and Unity are the core principles of art design, aiming to form an organic whole through the coordination of various elements in the work, and bring the audience a consistent and harmonious visual experience.

Title Of Entry: Il Cenacolo,L'Ultima Cena
Through the symmetrical composition, the unified tone and the coordinated arrangement of the character's posture, the overall sense of harmony is created.

Symbol

Symbols play a role in artistic design to convey a specific message, emotion, or concept. Through the use of symbols, artists give their works a deeper meaning and cultural connotation.

Title Of Entry: 《Scalding》
Use the cross and star symbols to piece together a frame and then connect the symbols with lines to form an S-shape.

Figure1.8: Scalding
Word and Image

In art design, the combination of words and images can create unique visual effects and enhance the depth and breadth of information transmission.

Title Of Entry: Character poster 》
The character portrait is cleverly integrated with the text, and the text part is intertwined with the character image to form a unique visual effect, which enhances the sense of hierarchy and information transmission effect of the poster.

Artwork of Interest

Figure1.10: Artwork of Interest《 Scuola di Atene

Author:
Raphael
Year:1509-1511
Size:500 cm × 770 cm(200 in × 300 in)

Reason:
The artwork incorporates many design methods, and the entire composition looks comfortable and balanced.

Contras / BalanceMovement

Contras: The colors in the picture are rich and coordinated, and the combination of cold and warm tones enhances the visual layer. Plato wore red (symbolizing passion and philosophical speculation) and Aristotle wore blue (symbolizing reason and science), and the contrast of colors reinforced the philosophical opposition between the two men.

Balance: The picture is symmetrical, with the central figure as the axis, showing a balanced structure. Although the distribution of characters has their own movements and gestures, the whole maintains a stable visual balance, making the picture both vivid and harmonious.

Movement: Each character has unique movements and expressions that reveal their thoughts and personalities and make the picture vibrant. The gestures of the central figure suggest differences in philosophical views: Plato's fingers pointed upward (symbolizing the ideal world), Aristotle's palms pointed downward (symbolizing the real world).

FEEDBACK

Week 1 General:
In the first week, we attended Mr. Vinod's class, in which Mr. Vinod created a form for us to fill in our information and feedback and then assigned the tasks for the first week.

Week 1 Specific:
Complete MIB1 to 4.

Week 2 General:
Perform subsequent operations on the MIB

Week 2 Specific:
Change the format of the blog, there is a mistake in the format of the task submission, and Balance needs to change to a more convincing artwork.

Week 3 General:
This week's task was self-consultation, we waited in the pre-allocated time group and updated the latest task progress.

Week 3 Specific:
Fix the layout of the blog and add a jump link to the table of contents

REFLECTION

Experience

Before learning this module, I did not have a thorough understanding of the design principles, but the research and search of the design principles in the first task made me understand the most basic design principles.

Observation

This task enabled me to understand the most basic design principles. When analyzing other works, I found that some works contain many different design principles, and each design principle complements the others.

Findings

The connotation of a work is related to metaphor. In some works, artists often use some design principles to imply and express some information, through which we can understand the author's feelings or thoughts at that time.
