TASK 2

LECTURES

Lectures are done in Task1

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 2A: Key Artwork

Instruction:
- create a key artwork that represents personal identity, using initials, first name or nickname
- explore and compose some artwork ideas with a few letters in your name (min 3 letters)
- use elements that can represent you the most (personalities, interests, visions, etc.), and choose the best one for your personal branding
- the artwork will be subsequently used in task 2B: collateral
- artwork size: 1024 x 1024

Ideas:
I wanted to use my initial English name "FOX" as my main artwork but since the minimum requirement is four letters I chose to use "FOXY" instead. Because the core of this task is to express my own characteristics and ideas, I wanted to incorporate the fox and the cunning personality into the work. Accentuate the "foxy" character by morphing the letter part into a fox tail or fox head , or adding some triangular fox ears.

Key artwork idea concept:
In China, the representative words of fox are usually cunning, mysterious, light and noble. I want to make these words implement my products and become my core. The performance of the last three words should be well expressed through color matching or the characteristics of the product itself.

Figure 1.1: A rough draft of the idea.

I changed the upper right corner of "F,X,Y" to look like the tail of a fox, and modified the upper left corner to look like the head of a fox, and added a white color block to act as the white part of the fox's chest. For "O", I chose to make it look like a fox lying on its stomach, with ears and a tail covering the body to express mystery.

Applying colours:

In the end, I chose these three methods, using dark purple as the font color and other colors as the background.

Task 2B: Collateral

Instruction:

- Expand the key artwork with relevant designs
- Size: 1024 x 1024
- Create an Instagram account and post the key artwork & collateral, plan the layout

Figure 2.2: Color block background

I simply drew some color block combinations to enrich the whole picture as my background.

Figure 2.3: Product picture

Because I didn't find the product pictures I liked, I chose to create my product by hand, so that I could better choose the background and tone.

Week 5: Specific feedback: The wordmark is good to go.

Week 6: General Feedback: Choose a collateral that you like to use. Try to expand your identity even further with the wordmark. Do not just copy & paste wordmark into your collaterals.

Week 7: General Feedback: We need to upload the work to the Instagram.
Week 7: Specific feedback: The wordmark is nice. It is something that I can put on a T-shirt.

Reflection

Experience: In T2, we were asked to design a brand and product of our own, which was very interesting. We had to make a trademark and concept and complete the creation of the product, which gave me a sense of accomplishment.

Observation: In this assignment, I found that our goods should have good design, good starting point and good meaning.

Findings: Although this task is interesting, it requires me to constantly try and revise my results and make some choices about the works because of the meaning I want to express. In order to better express the connotation of the brand, more products need to be tried and more specific meaning expression, of course, the most important thing is good design.

Further Reading

Fig 4.1: Book Cover

This book is like a designer's compass, he quickly tells you how to better design. In this book,  Vignelli tells us the very key design rules. It's best to organize your work neatly with a grid. And the choice of fonts can either destroy a work or make it better.
