TASK 1

LECTURES

WEEK 1/30.08.2023

AdTypo_1_Typographic Systems

typographic system- 8 MAJOR VARIATION
  • AXIAL
  • RADIAL
  • DILATIONAL
  • RANDOM
  • GRID
  • MODULAR
  • TRANSITIONAL
  • BILATERAL

COMPLEX- element are dependent on communication to functionable.

no communication=no typography system.

In the first week, we will make 8 square posters according to the 8 layout system. Typography system provided solid framework to learner to be guided in exploration.by following a system, it would be help along the way of exploration.

  • AXIAL= information organized into a single axis that being left or right, divided into different group.

  • RADIAL= all elements are extended from a point of a focus, and spread out.

  • DILATIONAL (ring)= element expand from a central point in a circular manner.

  • RANDOM (MOST TIME SPENT) =in a chaos, the balance of structure, crucial information are clear.

  • Grid= a focus point to give attention to viewer.

  • TRANSITIONAL(Band)= it needs a sense of balance of space, also an informal system for layered banding.

  • BILATERAL=All text is arranged symmetrically, mostly used as invitation card.

  • Modular = Element constructed to a standardized unit, the unit can be randomly place as it's already standardized.
WEEK 2/06.09.2023

AdTypo_2_Typographic Composition

Principle of design composition (Balance, contrast, emphasis, repetition, scale, hierarchy, alignment, negative space, unity and movement) = some are easily translated to typography term, but some are not, it can be usable but not that easy.

Rule of Third: it's a photography term but not commonly use in typography.

Typography system: most used system is grid system; it is based on printing technology in the past but still it can be used now, the chaos is exciting and more attracted people now example like random dilatational system and more.

Enviromental grid: based on exploration of existing structure or numeral structure (architecture, interior design etc.)

Form and movement: based on existing system. this system is to get student to explored.

WEEK 3/13.09.2023

AdTypo_3_Content and Creativity

Handwriting-handwriting is the first step of creating letterform in the past, without handwriting there might not be typography.
the whole lectures are about history and culture of the letterform creation in Europe, it is almost the whole heritage of Europe letterform, but for letterform in Asia, the letterform keep changing and mostly ancient letterform cannot be recognized by now. It is important that our culture to be carry to the future generation.

WEEK 4/20.09.2023

AdTypo_4_Designing typeface.

Why designing typeface?

  • Type design carried a social responsibility, so we need to continue to improve its legibility.
  • A form of artistic expression
21st century type remix by Lewis Blackwell

Adrian Frutiger: its purpose is to create a clean distinctive legible typeface that is easy to see both close up and far away.

INSTRUCTION

Exercise 1-Typography system

Research-I didn't have a lot of ideas when I started this task, so I tried to search through various templates on Pinterest to find a general look and modify it slightly.

Process

Axial System

I tried to make this axis with diagonal or curved lines, hoping to make it look less monotonous.
Figure 1.1 Axial system draft (30.08.2023)

I made two styles of posters and used different axes to distinguish the content.

Figure 1.2 Axial system draft (30.08.2023)

I chose khaki color and symmetry with all the text to make the poster more readable.
Figure 1.3 Axial system draft (30.08.2023)
Figure 1.3 Final (30.08.2023)

Dilatational System

For the extended system, people want to create a sense of interlocking, larger circles wrapped in smaller circles.

The other picture is more like an attempt, but it is obvious that this effect is not good, and the three colors of red and black and white cannot be properly used to enrich the interaction of the poster.
Figure 1.4 Dilatational System (30.08.2023)

My idea is to design a poster in accordance with the main color of Tele University, red and black. Multiple circles are used to wrap the small circle, and one ring is interlocked with another, which can reflect the inclusiveness of Tele University. The circular text around the circle is like students joining here, which cannot be divided.
Figure 1.5 Final (30.08.2023)

The other picture is more like an attempt, but it is obvious that this effect is not good, and the three colors of red and black and white cannot be properly used to enrich the interaction of the poster.

Radial System

I have tried two different typesetting methods for the radiation-shaped poster, but obviously the poster on the right is better, and too many regular typesetting on the left side will look out of place in this poster.

Figure 1.7 Radial System (30.08.2023)

This is the Final style.

Figure 1.8 Radial System Final (30.08.2023)

Random system

In this mode of poster, the most important thing is how to make the messy text layout readable. In the case of excessive text, I decided to change the font size to distinguish the text from the gray surface.

Figure 1.9 Random system (30.08.2023)

Text can be cluttered by font size and obscured without losing readability.

Figure 1.10 Random system Final (30.08.2023)

Grid system

Figure 1.11 Grid system (30.08.2023)

I didn't have much idea of the grid system poster, but I tried the two most basic arrangement methods, and finally I chose the first one because it was at least less boring than the second one.

Figure 1.12 Grid system Final (30.08.2023)

modular system

What I want to do here is to use different color blocks for segmentation and segmentation.

Figure 1.13 modular system (30.08.2023)

By distinguishing the color blocks and rotating the text I made the following two poster schemes and finally I chose the second one.

Bilateral system

Transitional system

I had no idea about this template, so I had to make some random drafts.

This is the final work.

Exercise 2-Type and Play

In this exercise, we need to conduct some research on the homework samples of seniors. Many unique letters with leaf elements can be formed through the space and plane of leaves, so I began to look for interesting subjects, such as leaves, broken nets and water objects, and finally I chose French fries.

Figure 3.1 Progression 1 (12.09.2023)

The first time I tried this was a novel way of making letters, and I got some feedback that I could modify the curvature of some lines to make them look straighter and make the letters more like French fries.

Figure 3.2 Progression 2 (18.09.2023)

This is what happens when the changes are done.

feedback

Week 2 General Feedback: Teacher generally commented on the assignment and required the use of margins in the poster making process and paid attention to the readability and various features of the poster.
Week 3 General Feedback: The teacher reviewed the work and gave some comments, after which we began to revise and practice in class.

Reflection

Experience

At task 1, I found that the process of doing exercises can be very happy and relaxed, but I was still under a lot of pressure in the preparation stage. I learned a lot and knew how to adjust my mind. Every time I finished my work and was praised by the teacher for doing a good job, I was very happy. I hope I can get better and better in the future and get rid of the problem of procrastination.

Observation

I find that I need to do more typing exercises or reading of different fonts in my spare time to improve my sensitivity and reserve of fonts, so that I can have more inspiration to create and improve the completion or quality of my works as soon as I receive task information.

Findings

Because my design level is very low and I have a very serious language barrier, I usually need to spend more time to finish my works or ideas. Therefore, I think I need to improve my standards for works and make more attempts, so that I can become better and better.

The eight basic typesetting systems are basically the same, and it is necessary to pay attention to whether line breaks are needed to increase readability when typesetting and composition.
